This Conscious Breathing Exercise helps to calm anxiety, and or distress.

Make yourself comfortable either by sitting or laying down, sometimes it helps to close your eyes to focus, do not do this exercise whilst driving or working with machinery.

1 Breathe out all air in the lungs first, then breathe in to the count of 4.

2 Now hold the breath to the same count of 4.

3 Breathe out to the count of 8, you can use your abdominal muscles to empty the lungs of air, now rest for 2 heartbeats. If you are feel out of breath, just swallow once, if you feel lightheaded from over breathing  just return to your normal, natural breath.

4 Then when ready you can return to the exercise.

Recap.

Breathe in to 4, hold to 4, breathe out to 8, rest for 2, then begin the exercise again.

To reverse the fight or flight response, do a minimum of 6 rounds. The more you use it the more comfortable you become with working with your breath.

You can use this exercise as often as you want to, to help you relax, or overcome emotional distress.
